JUST IN FROM "Organic Consumers Association"
INDUSTRY IGNORES CONSUMER CONCERNS & CREATES BOGUS "OASIS" ORGANIC STANDARD A new "organic" standard for personal care products has been created exclusively by conventional industry members like Estee Lauder (owner of Aveda), Loreal and Hain (Jason, Avalon), without any input or comment period from organic consumers, organic farmers or personal care companies who have achieved USDA National Organic Program certification for the majority of their products. The OASIS standard allows a product to be labeled outright as “Organic” (rather than “Made with Organic Specified Ingredients”) even if it contains hydrogenated and sulfated cleansing ingredients like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate made from conventional agricultural material grown with synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, and preserved with synthetic petrochemical preservatives like Ethylhexylglycerin and Phenoxyethanol. As always, the OCA recommends consumers look for personal care products certified under the USDA National Organic Program. Learn more: http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_10886.cfm

Martindale's Natural Market
- THE APPLE
- Known As the Oldest Natural Foods Store in the USA. Thomas Martindale opened a food store in Olde City, Philadelphia in 1869. The store included a lunch room, some office space and a set up to manufacture a coffee substitute. The foods served in the lunchroom were salads, soups, the Martindales coffee substitute, Mate tea, healty baked goods without the use of sugar and ice cream from Bassett's. The ice cream was sweetened with honey and the baked goods with honey and maple syrup. Thomas C. Martindale would talk with people about becoming vegetarians, or at the very least, reducing their intake of meat and sugar. Thomas Martindale's idea of health foods was simple. Whole grains, whole wheat, no sugar, fiber foods and eliminate junk food. Later a juice bar was added where they made vegetable juices, yogurt and fruit juices. In 1971, Martindale’s opened a store in the Olde Sproul Shopping Village in Springfield, Pa. Today the Martindales message of Caring from the Heart reaches into the lives of people locally as well as those at greater distances. Our focus is on caring for our staff, our customers, our community and our resources.

AMANDA
Hi Amanda,
This is Shirley at Martindale's. I understand your descriptive word "UNBELIEVABLE"! I expect we will be hearing more about this topic. As news breaks we will post them on this blog.
Thank you very much for your interest, concern and comment!
